Attending the Manchester Legal Awards

About Andrew Johnston: Andrew is a part-qualified trainee patent attorney, with experience in research and with patenting a wide range of technologies in different sectors. Andrew holds a first class MSci in physics from Imperial College London, spent time studying in Madrid, and earned a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Oxford.

On Thursday 09 June 2022, I attended the Manchester Legal Awards at the Midland Hotel with some of my colleagues from the Manchester office. It was the first time that the event had been held for two years due to the pandemic.

After an arrival drink, we headed to the dining room for a brief welcome speech followed by a three-course meal. Between courses, the night’s host walked on to PJ and Duncan to introduce award nominees and winners. Other walk-on music highlights included fellow one-hit wonders Alien Ant Farm and The Weather Girls. Appleyard Lees’ very own Bill Lister (pictured) presented the award for ED&I Champion.

Through the well-attended dinner, I was sat next to partner Simon Bradbury. The departure of several attendees meant that me and fellow trainee Richard Maclennan gratefully received extra dessert portions.

As ever, it was good to spend time with colleagues outside the office, as well as meeting professionals from other parts of the legal sector.
