Co-founded by Phill Speed, CEO, and Professor Rob Young, Chief Scientific Officer and Royal Society Research Fellow, Quantum Base span out from Lancaster University. Quantum Base has invented, developed and patented a portfolio of unbreakable nanoscale quantum security devices that are simple, scalable, small and cheap.
Appleyard Lees has worked with Quantum Base since their inception, when we assisted with their first patent filing. Fast forward to 2016, and Quantum Base looked to expand their patent portfolio to protect a vast and growing array of quantum security devices. As an exciting, innovative and growing spin-out, burn of funds is something that has to be carefully managed. We assisted Quantum Base by making an award from our Growth Fund, facilitating protection for more of their technology. We know that helping spin-outs at this early stage can be absolutely critical to their long-term success.
Now to 2018, and Quantum Base has an impressive patent portfolio, consisting of 13 patent families and in excess of 10 granted and soon-to-be-granted patents. Recent research that we have undertaken in this quantum tech sector has revealed the expansion of companies’ patent portfolios over time. Quantum Base rank in the top 20 in the world, and are ranked first for all UK-based companies.
A clever strategic approach has allowed us, together, to quickly secure granted patents in key territories, validating the patentability of the technology and securing a valuable commercial position as a result, all whilst carefully managing and generally balancing the spend on, and speed of progression of, the patent portfolio as a whole.
In July 2017, Quantum Base was invited to exhibit its quantum-based optical security innovation at the Royal Society, and the technology was met with wide-ranging technical and mainstream acclaim. In something of a first, Quantum Base has been invited back in 2018, and this time will be showing-off their quantum-based random number generator at The Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition. We are proudly assisting and co-exhibiting with Quantum Base at this exhibition.
Richard Bray, partner and patent attorney for Quantum Base, says:
“It has been a fantastic journey over these last few years, from initially helping with a fledgling spin-out, all the way through to really being part of the Quantum Base team, developing an extremely impressive patent portfolio in the process. Being able to support Quantum Base at the Royal Society Exhibition is, of course, a fantastic demonstration of our relationship.
On a personal level, though, it is just extremely exciting to be able to be involved in things like this. I am genuinely proud to get such opportunities, for me and for Appleyard Lees, and be able to show how well we are able to support and develop client relationships.”
Phill Speed says:
“Here at Quantum Base our goal is to truly change the world for the better, and as a result of that we are building one of the hottest tech startups on the planet using revolutionary Quantum Technology breakthroughs to underpin everything that we do. We aim to make a dramatic difference to society, whether that be reducing counterfeit goods or counterfeit pharmaceuticals, or improving the security of electronic devices and security of transactions over the internet. As you can imagine, that’s ambitious and hard, so having great world class partners to help us with this is critical. Appleyard Lees and Richard Bray specifically are just that.”
Rob Young says:
“Working with Richard and Appleyard Lees is a pleasure. I am sure we wouldn’t be where we are today without them.”
Exciting things are happening at Quantum Base!
