Terry Instone

MA(Cantab) PhD MInstP CPhys CPA EPA
Terry has an MA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge and a PhD in semiconductor physics. Working in private practice since 2007, he was a colloid/polymer/nanotechnology research scientist with Unilever for almost 20 years before joining their in-house patent team.
From the early days of his patent attorney career, Terry has been heavily involved in European patent oppositions, representing Unilever, and later Reckitt Benckiser as in-house counsel; looking after a variety of detergent products and OTC drugs from dishwasher tablets to esomeprazole compositions.
Terry has handled oppositions and defences for multinational companies in the fields of polymers, polymer additives and polymer prosthetics, silicates, zeolites and catalysts, fabric treatments, foods, nutraceuticals and drinks.
Currently, much of Terry’s work relates to European oppositions and appeals in the field of pharmaceutical compositions, usually working for generic manufacturers, often as a “straw man”. He also continues to deal with drafting and prosecution of patent applications in a variety of fields, ranging from electronics to chemistry.
Terry has UK patent litigation experience, acting for clients before IPEC and the High Court, and advises on infringement and freedom to operate.
